My dad had some old planes lying around that my grandpa, who had been a woodworker and builder in his day, had made himself. I decided to bring them back to life as the blades had been poorly sharpened so they needed a bit of love.
I sharpend both blades so they were as flat as i could get them using 80 >120 > 180 > 240 sand paper and then moved to 40 > 30 > 9 micron lapping film and finishing off with some polishing paste on paper.
I sanded the bottoms of the planes as they had gathered some damage of the years of usage as well as dirt and debri. Final products below and a quick little test on a scrap piece of walnut. Perfect for chamfers!
I decided to leave the patina on the sides and top for now; might sand these over in the future.
Fun fact; the larger of the 2 planes has a year engraved on it: 1937! This is probably when my grandpa made it at 18 years old early on in his career. He would put dates like these of cutting boards he had made for us in the past. He’s not around anymore but i bet he’s proud and happy to see his tools still in use 😊
