I like making something as a present to people. For this present I had some very good inside information that my sister was in need of a tray/holder for all her herbs. So I was aware which type of containers she was using and how much she owned. She had about 20, but i ended up decided on making a container for 18 as this make the tray not too large and still hold almost all of containers.
I forgot to take some pictures starting off, but im using 15mm birch plywood for the sides and the bottom is 6mm poplar. In the future I'll try to get a hold of the same type of wood as the finish i used ended up slightly different on both. Wasn't very noticeable but still.
All pieces cut to size and rabbets cut. I made the sides slightly angled which will become clear why in a second.

Quick dry to fit get a first look at how the containers look and the dimensions look good. I was happy with the size so just moved on.

So I added some steps to raise the containers in the back so you canr ead which ones are there and this should also make it easier to grab them. At first i actually was planning on creating a little drawer which you could open from the side however with the 6mm poplar i used for the steps there wasn't really a lot of space so i ended up deciding it wasn't worth the effort and just kept it clean and simple. I also trimmed the edges which was a little bit tricket due to the angle and the corners, but nothing a little hand sangin won't fix!
Steps glued in and check the spacing. Looking good!

so we have 6 containers wide and 3 steps which gives us 18 containers. More than enough space for all the herbs!

For the finish I used osmo natural hardwax oil. I had some other finishes lying around however I wasn't too happy with those.

The finish turned out great! This specific type of osmo did slightly darken/yellow the plywood but I though it brought out some good character in the piece.
